# Is LIftIng Capacıty the Rıght Fırst Questıon When Choosıng a Taıl Lıft?

Two tail lifts can carry the same capacity rating. Does that mean they are equally suitable for the same operation?

Picture a delivery vehicle arriving at a location without a loading dock. The cargo is palletised, space behind the vehicle is limited, and a pallet truck is needed to move the goods. The driver also has several more deliveries to complete.

In that situation, selecting suitable equipment requires more than comparing the largest number in a product specification.

“How much can it lift?” is an essential question. But when it becomes the only question, important details can disappear from the discussion: where the load will sit, whether the platform provides enough working space, how the lift fits the vehicle, and how often it will operate.

Choosing a tail lift starts with understanding the complete delivery task.

## What should you consider when choosing a tail lift?

**Tail lift selection should consider lifting capacity together with load centre, platform dimensions, total platform load, vehicle compatibility, operating frequency and delivery conditions.** Two models with the same nominal capacity may suit different loads and working patterns.

A more useful opening question is:

**“What will we lift, on which vehicle, under what conditions, and how often?”**

Answering that question helps define the capacity requirement within the context of the actual operation.

![Varlık 1](https://www.ndl.com.tr/hs-fs/hubfs/Varl%C4%B1k%201.jpg?width=4000&height=1414&name=Varl%C4%B1k%201.jpg)

## 1. Lifting capacity depends on load position

A nominal capacity rating does not mean that the same weight can be handled at every point on the platform. The rating must be read alongside the manufacturer’s specified load centre and loading conditions.

Load centre describes the position of the load’s centre of gravity relative to a reference defined by the manufacturer. Moving a load farther towards the outer edge changes the mechanical demand on the lift. The permitted load may therefore decrease according to the model’s load diagram.

This matters particularly when handling long or bulky items. Two loads with identical weights can have different dimensions and weight distributions, making their positions on the platform different.

During the selection process, ask where your actual load will sit and which capacity applies at that position. The answer should come from the selected model’s documentation rather than a general assumption.

The capacity label is a starting point. The load diagram explains how that capacity relates to the intended use. [Technical reference: manufacturer guidance on load diagrams](https://www.dhollandia.com/files/use-V02-EN-2009-complete.pdf)

## 2. Product weight is only part of the calculation

Shipping documents usually highlight the weight of the goods. The platform, however, may need to carry more than the goods themselves.

Pallets, packaging and handling equipment also need to be considered. Where the model permits an operator to travel on the platform, that person’s weight must be included in the assessment under the manufacturer’s instructions.

For example, the recorded weight of a shipment may not represent the complete load when it is moved using a pallet truck. Selecting equipment solely from the shipment figure can therefore leave an incomplete picture of the lifting task.

A practical approach is to list every item that will be on the platform during a lifting cycle. Establish its weight and confirm that the proposed arrangement complies with the selected model’s instructions.

This makes the specification more useful to everyone involved: the operator, the vehicle bodybuilder, the equipment supplier and the purchasing team.

## 3. Platform dimensions deserve equal attention

A load can fall within the weight limit and still be unsuitable for the available platform arrangement.

Length, width, overhangs, handling equipment and working space all influence how the load can be positioned. The question is whether the intended loading arrangement can be accommodated safely and in accordance with the operating instructions.

Standard pallet dimensions provide useful information, but they should not replace an assessment of the goods actually carried. Appliances, beverage deliveries, wheeled containers and irregular industrial components can create different requirements.

Before requesting a quotation, prepare the dimensions of representative loads. Include the handling equipment and explain how goods move between the vehicle body, platform and delivery point.

A clear description of the task is more informative than asking for a “large platform”. It allows the technical discussion to focus on the space the operation genuinely requires.

## 4. Select the lift as part of the vehicle

A tail lift becomes part of a working vehicle system. It needs to be assessed with the chassis and body rather than as an isolated accessory.

Mounting suitability, rear overhang, body floor height, available installation space and electrical supply are all relevant considerations. The lift’s own weight also needs to be included when assessing available vehicle payload and axle loading.

Choosing a higher capacity model does not automatically improve the overall result. Additional equipment weight, installation requirements and cost may introduce trade-offs that need to be evaluated.

The objective is to identify a configuration that meets the operational requirement while remaining compatible with the vehicle.

That assessment should use the actual vehicle and proposed lift specification. Similar-looking vehicles or identical headline lift capacities do not provide enough information to confirm suitability.

## 5. Daily working patterns change the requirement

A vehicle completing a few deliveries has a different operating profile from one making frequent stops throughout the day.

The selection discussion should therefore include expected lifting cycles, delivery frequency, driving time between stops and the working environment. For an electrically powered hydraulic system, the energy requirement and vehicle supply arrangement should be considered alongside that operating profile.

Everyday usability also matters. Platform deployment, control positions and the sequence of operating steps become part of the driver’s routine.

A detail that seems minor during a demonstration may become significant when repeated throughout a shift. Involving drivers and maintenance staff can help reveal these practical requirements before equipment is specified.

Useful questions include: Which tasks are repeated most often? Where does handling become awkward? Which current equipment features help the operator, and which create difficulty?

Their answers can turn a general purchasing brief into a description of real work.

## 6. The delivery location belongs in the specification

A demonstration in a spacious depot cannot represent every delivery site.

Available working space, ground conditions, pedestrian movement and the route taken by the goods after leaving the platform all influence the delivery task. These factors should inform both equipment selection and operational planning.

Different load types also require different considerations. An operation using wheeled containers may need a different platform arrangement and appropriate retention features from one handling stationary palletised goods.

The suitability of those features and the handling method must be established from the load type and the manufacturer’s instructions.

Industry guidance on safer tail lift deliveries also highlights the importance of assessing delivery locations and sharing information between the parties involved. Equipment selection benefits from that same understanding of the complete delivery chain. ## 7. Include service and maintenance in the purchasing decision

The relationship between a tail lift and an operation continues long after installation.

Maintenance planning, service access, spare parts availability and technical documentation should therefore form part of the selection discussion. Purchase price is straightforward to compare, but it does not describe every aspect of equipment ownership.

Ask how maintenance will be organised, what information operators will receive, and how technical support can be accessed. Consider how an equipment issue could affect vehicle availability and delivery planning.

These questions help establish how the equipment will be supported within the business. They also give purchasing, operations and maintenance teams a shared basis for evaluating proposals.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can two tail lifts with the same capacity perform the same task?

Not necessarily. Their load centres, platform dimensions, vehicle compatibility and operating requirements may differ. Compare them against the actual load and delivery scenario.

### Is a higher capacity tail lift always the better choice?

No. Capacity must be considered alongside equipment weight, vehicle limits, working conditions and cost. Suitability depends on the complete application.

### Should pallet truck weight be included in the load assessment?

Yes. Handling equipment present on the platform during the lifting cycle forms part of the total load assessment. Confirm the precise loading conditions in the model’s operating instructions.

### What information should you prepare before selecting a tail lift?

Prepare vehicle and body details, the weights and dimensions of representative loads, handling equipment information, expected operating frequency and typical delivery conditions.

## A better question leads to a better specification

Keep asking, “How much can it lift?” Then add another question:

**“How well does this tail lift fit the way we actually work?”**

When discussing your requirements with NDL Tail Lift, bring together your vehicle details, load dimensions and delivery scenario. That provides a practical starting point for assessing the application as a whole.

**What has the greatest influence on tail lift selection in your operation: capacity, platform dimensions, vehicle compatibility or service support?**
